I am an authentic athlete. My body is my tool, it is what sets me apart from the person I’m competing with, and it only develops to the extent that my mind allows it. I am only as good as I let myself be, and I can always be better.

I play on a softball team of seventeen girls. We play what has paradoxically been called an “individual team sport”; we win and lose as a team, but we only succeed if each player does their part when called upon. To be the best team possible, we must be composed of athletes that recognize our strengths, correct our weaknesses, and embrace that which makes us unique and gives us an edge over our competitor.  We must be a team composed of genuine, authentic athletes.

How can you spot the genuine from the fakes? How would you distinguish the authentic athlete from the fraud? It’s not hard. He’s the first to show up and the last to leave. She’s the one that sacrifices what others won’t, to get where others never will. He’s the one that rises with the sun to get better while the other guy sleeps.

Authentic means real. It means sweat, blood, pain, and tears. It means ice baths and two-a-days. It means driving all night to play all day. The life of an authentic athlete is not for the faint of heart. It’s a lifestyle embraced only by a minority of the population strong enough to handle it. If it was easy, everyone would do it.

So the next time you step into the weight room, the next time you lace up your cleats, the next time you take the field, ask yourself; are you authentic?
